Kristia Moya Of Exit She Calls ~ Interview Type Thing

Recently I had the pleasure of chatting with Kristia Moya. Kristia, is the Singer/Guitar player from Exit She Calls who are releasing an EP sometime this summer. She also does a solo project which is how she came to our attention. She does some really amazing acoustic punk rock covers.

FP: Well, let me start by saying I really like what you are doing. I absolutely love Exit She Calls but, you do some amazing versions of some punk songs and totally make them your own. They way you strip them down and make your guitar and voice the focus of how great and meaningful the song truly is.

KM: Thanks, Frank. pretty much the songs I cover are my favorite songs and I like to show others that and how much they mean to me by creating my own version.

FP: Where are you from?

KM: A small town called Ridgefield that's located in Bergen County, New Jersey.

FP: What are the best things about being from there?

KM: To be honest with you, nothing. Especially up in my county, the music scene has gone terribly wrong and it's been like that for years now. I'm lucky that I live 10 minutes from NYC so I spend most of my free time there, hanging out and/or going to shows. Though, it seems like Central Jersey has kept their DIY scene strong and it's great going to shows down there because everyone's supportive of each other. It's also the same in NYC(Especially Brooklyn.).

FP: How long have you been playing music?

KM: I guess I can say about 7 years now. I'll be 20 next month and I started when I was just turning 13.

FP: Tell us more about your band Exit She Calls?

KM: Well, ESC started off in 2004 as an acoustic side project of mine while I was playing in and out of bands. I'd play some acoustic shows/open mics here and there and would put up rough recordings on myspace to share with others. A friend of mine, Ryan Bertone(current drummer), had mentioned making ESC a full band throughout the years, but it didn't happen until last summer. I was lucky enough to get both Jeff Lambert on guitar, he had been in a band with Ryan, and Carlos Rivero on bass right away. From there on, everything just fell into place.

FP: You are playing the Warped Tour 2009 How awesome is that?

KM: -Yes! It is awesome! It's safe to say that this is almost every local band's dream to be playing a festival like Warped Tour and we're beyond grateful. We're so excited to be taking part in the Camden date on July 17th.

FP: Are you the main songwriter?

KM: I guess you can say that I am the main songwriter. It starts off with me showing the band a song that I've written and it takes off from there by each member adding their part to it.

FP : The song "Miscommunication" is that directed at someone in your life?

KM: Yes, it was. All the songs I write about are directed towards people in my life; whether they like it or not. The meaning behind it is pretty self-explanatory, though. At least I think so, but to keep it simple...it's about a relationship having its struggles and realizing after the downfall of it, it isn't worth questioning the "why's" and "how's" anymore.

FP: Your cover of “Shirt” I really loved partly because Jawbreaker is one of my all time favorite bands, but the way you did it. You have an amazing style.

KM: "I really appreciate your feedback on my attempt on the song. I cover my favorite songs and since this song is one of them, I wanted to show others how much the song means to me by adding my own style to it."

FP: One of my favorites on the EP is "EncountHER" It's been stuck in my head ever since I first heard it. Do you have any plans on touring and making it down to South Florida?

KM: Right now we're just focusing on playing as much shows as we can and release an album so that we can expand our fanbase. We'd love to play anywhere we can to get our name out there so hopefully we'll be good to go for a tour next summer and South Florida is a must!

We have a bunch of shows coming up within New Jersey and New York.

All you gotta do is hit up the myspace!
